For most light vehicles up to 4.5 tons, you have the option to register your vehicle for 6 months (short term registration) or a full year.
Note that a greenslip is a legal requirement to register your vehicle and that the period of your CTP Insurance must be the same as the registration period. This means that if you purchase a 6-month greenslip, you will only be able to register your vehicle for 6 months, and if you purchase a 12-month greenslip, you may only register your vehicle for 12 months.
Short term registration is not available when establishing a new registration. This means that you will be required to register your vehicle for 12 months under the following circumstances:
- Registering a brand new vehicle
- Registering a vehicle that was transferred from another state
- Registering a vehicle that you imported from abroad
- Re-registering a vehicle whose rego has lapsed 90 days.
Eligibility for Short Term Registration
You only have until the 21st day from the vehicle’s registration due date to purchase a 6-month greenslip. After the 21st day, you should purchase only a 12-month greenslip.
You have until 90 days from the vehicle’s registration due date to purchase a 12-month greenslip.
Your greenslip has a use-by date. Your vehicle must be registered with the RMS on or before the use-by date, otherwise the greenslip is no longer valid.
For 6-month CTP Insurance for common light vehicles up to 4.5 tons GVM, the use-by date is 21 days from the registration due date or registration expiry date. If you purchase a 6-month greenslip before the 21st day from the due date but only register the vehicle after the 21st day, the greenslip will no longer be valid. You will be required to purchase a 12-month greenslip and consequently, register the vehicle for a full year.
Registration Expiry Date: 01 May 2014
Term of Greenslip Insurance: 6 months
Use-by date: 22 May 2014
On or prior to 22 May 2014, you may purchase a 6-month greenslip, and you are eligible for short term registration.
From 23 May 2014 onwards, you may only purchase a 12-month greenslip. You will also have to register your vehicle for a full year.
If you purchased a 6-month greenslip before 22 May 2014, but attempt to register the vehicle after 22 May, your 6-month greenslip will no longer be valid. You will still have to purchase a 12-month greenslip and register the vehicle for a full year.
For a 12-month CTP Insurance, the use-by date is 90 days from the registration due date or expiry date. After this date, your vehicle’s registration will be cancelled. You must return the number plates of your vehicle to a motor registry office or an RMS service centre within 14 days from the cancellation of your registration. Keeping your number plates beyond this period is an offence. You may still re-register your vehicle even if it has lapsed the 90-day grace period. However, a blue slip will be required from you, in addition to a green slip. If your vehicle is being re-registered, you may only register your vehicle for 12 months.
