Nowadays, there are several things that can take the driver’s attention away from the road. And we all know that a moment’s inattention can be very risky and fatal. So we’re rounding up the top driver distractions in the hopes that we all check ourselves and be more aware of unsafe practices we may inadvertently be doing.
1. Mobile Phones
There have been countless researches illustrating how the use of mobile phones increases the risk of getting into an accident. Reading or sending text messages and/or emails are the worst. There are several campaigns by government institutions as well as the private sector for more awareness and to discourage people from using phones in any way while behind the wheel. They all have a clear and strong message – that text and that phone call can wait.
2. Adjusting Vehicle Settings
This is one seemingly harmless habit amongst drivers. In the moment, we might be inclined to think that fiddling with the car radio or the air conditioning is a completely harmless thing. However, that one or split second of inattention to the roads can be very dangerous. For your safety, it’s best to make any adjustments before you start driving.
Having friends in the car can greatly distract a driver. It does not have to be horseplaying but even simply taking your eyes off the road to get more involved in a conversation with friends in the vehicle can be very risky. Always remember that talking while driving is fine, but keep your eyes aqnd focus on the road.
4. Eating, drinking, and smoking
We all know the perils of drink-driving. But according to studies, even sipping on that non-alcoholic soda gets your focus off the roads. Guess we can put off that burger for later!
5. External Distractions
There could even be far more distractions happening outside your vehicle that are beyond your control such as those interesting billboards and signages, other drivers, pedestrians, and more. You can’t control them but you can control your focus on the road and on your driving.
